Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

Warhorse Studios

A thrilling story-driven action RPG, with a rich open world, set in 15th century Medieval Europe. Experience the ultimate medieval adventure – through the eyes of young Henry – as you embark on a journey of epic proportions.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is the next chapter of the incredible realistic RPG Kickstarter success, Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It’s an open-world action RPG set in a realistic medieval world where the player and NPC reactions to the player can alter the game. Unlike other RPGs, the series doesn’t use any fantasy elements. The new game is twice the size of the original with two huge, freely explorable areas that are full of life. Unlike many RPGs, Deliverance II feels alive with a robust and diverse cast of NPCs. The full game takes around 120 hours to complete and is full of things to discover.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II picks up immediately from where the first game ended though the plot is quite easy to follow. While it helps, playing the first game isn’t a necessity. It’s set in the early 15th century in the Kingdom of Bohemia, in what is now called the Czech Republic.

The new game follows Henry from the first game in the turmoil of a civil war where he fights against Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund and his allies. Henry is joined by a small group on an excursion to deliver a message to one of Sigismund’s allies that could turn the war on its head. The story is very linear and the player choices have minimal effect on the story which can lead to some tricky situations depending on how you play the game.

It contains around 100 quests and offers a lot of variety alongside the main storyline. Some quests are very simple but others bring interesting twists, new story elements, emotional turmoil and decision making. The side quests aren’t necessary but they never feel like a chore and can add so much more to the story.

Every action in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II feeds the robust progression system and causes you to improve in each discipline the more you use it. Fighting with a sword will improve your skill with it but so will studying specific books. There are four primary stats in the game but a lot more skills to master throughout the adventure which can be really useful. It creates a sense that progression isn’t linear and requires you to do the thing or study to understand it which makes it feel intuitive.

All of the systems in Deliverance II feel well-fleshed out. Persuasion is influenced by appearance and trying to convince someone you’re a hero won’t work while wearing peasant clothes. Meanwhile, the crime system is fantastic. NPCs are intelligent enough to realise you might have had something to do with a stolen valuable item or murder if you were spotted lurking around the area before the discovery of the crime. You’ll even be punished if caught and the world will react to your criminal conviction too.

Saving the game also takes more work than simply going to the main menu. It’s only possible to save any progress by consuming a Savior Schnapps potion or sleeping in a bed you own/rented for the night. It does autosave in quests and there is an option to save and quit the game but, there’s no easy way to save the game on the spot.

Typically I don’t like medieval games but Kingdom Come Deliverance II has completely won me over. We’ve been playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance II on and off stream and its impressively large and complex that offers a huge amount. I can even see myself playing this game multiple times through. Queenie has been streaming this game live on our Twitch channel live in special 4K access and even watching has had me sucked into the stories.
