RoboCop: Rogue City - Unfinished Business
Nacon
Following RoboCop’s decisive victory over Detroit’s gangs, a new chapter unfolds in this standalone extension set after the events of RoboCop: Rogue City. Unfinished Business is a new standalone adventure of RoboCop: Rogue City. OmniTower is their fortress, violence their language. Face elite mercenaries all the way to the top of the tower and enforce the law amidst the chaos!
RoboCop: Rogue City – Unfinished Business is the standalone expansion for one of the best games of 2023. It’s a continuation of RoboCop: Rogue City and it’s just as good as the original 2023 game.
The new expansion retains the same retro style and builds directly upon the original 2023 game. It’s still a linear FPS game where you’ll be fighting through floors of enemies. While this is a great game by itself, it’s worth noting that it’s an expansion of Rogue City, so it’s not a complete narrative in its own right. However, there’s no need to own the original to purchase and play this game.
While this is a plot here, it’s nothing complicated. RoboCop: Rogue City – Unfinished Business takes RoboCop’s relentless crime-stomping rampage inside the OMNI Tower. The tower has been seized by an army of dangerous mercenaries, and it’s up to RoboCop to deal with the problem and restore order.
The game takes place almost entirely within the tower. It follows RoboCop making his way up through the high-rise building in search of stolen Omni Consumer Products. Failing to find the military wares could cause a fleet of ED-209s and other weapons of war to fall into the hands of an evil organisation and threaten the safety of the country. While the story is pretty linear, there are a few fun moments and twists. The classic ’80s style action and return of the original RoboCop actor Peter Weller really make this game feel at home in the franchise.
Pros
Great graphics
Feel like RoboCop
Slow-mo takedowns
Fun side missions
Great level design
Combat is satisfying
Cons
Minor bugs and glitches
Auto-9 is TOO GOOD a weapon
Feels a little repetitive at times
Combat is the biggest part of the game, but it’s not all there is. Each floor needs to be explored, and the civilian supporting side missions from the 2023 game are back again. The side missions are a nice break from the ultra-violence of the rest of the game, where you can save civilians stuck inside the tower, rescue hostages and even answer some questions about the old RoboCop movies.
When shouting “freeze” doesn’t work, RoboCop’s arsenal of weapons is impressively fun. With different guns, including the iconic Auto-9 and the all-new Cryo Cannon, enemy weapons and equipment you can borrow, such as shields or mounted guns and even the option to throw enemies like ragdolls. There are red barrels to blow up and different environmental items you can use to your advantage.
While the level design offers a lot of variety, the weapons can feel a little redundant with the Auto-9 having unlimited ammo, lots of upgradable attributes and that cool factor which makes it hard to want to use anything else. It’s overequipped to deal with enemies, and most of the time, it feels pointless to holster it for a different weapon. It does need to be said, though, RoboCop feels fantastic to play. From the visuals to the little camera movements while walking and the sound effects, the team have done a great job to make you feel like RoboCop.
In conclusion, I had a blast with this Robocop expansion. Unfinished Business is exactly what a DLC should be. It’s focused, badass, and worth the admission price. It totals around 9 hours of gameplay and expands on the best parts of Rogue City with more grit, more story, and more RoboCop. The only thing it misses is the open world feature from the base game – but gameplay still works well. The writing is sharp, the atmosphere remains soaked in that gritty 80s Detroit aesthetic, and the voice acting continues to deliver the perfect mix of nostalgia and cybernetic. You can tell that the devs are fans and have put real love into this. It’s most certainly not a cash grab but a solid continuation that respects the fan base. If you enjoyed Rogue City, you’ll buy that for a dollar!!!
